But anyway it seems to me a bit surprising that a thai girl like the army (i rspect your ideas anyway) I like thai culture, specially all relationed with buddhism and you should know Buddhadharma has very few with weapons and violence. Maybe you feel a strong desire of defending your country. I respect that too. Have you anyway to practise the four foundations of mindfulnes, satipatana (vipasana). Costarica is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a military and they are doing fine. After WWII, Japan had been limited from a migthy military forces to just enough forces, called a "Self Defense Force" and they are doing quiet all right. We're all should be pround and respect of one another, get over the idea of "I better than you, or we are richer than you and the worst of it all is to have seperation of classes. Everyone should be treated equally the same, colonize or not, weak army or strong army, it is doesn't matter. The matter is just be the best that you can be in what ever you do. Khun Areeya, congratulation for your commissioned in the army, I know that your grandfather, uncle, family and most of all your parent are pround of you. What is your job in the Army? Are you going all the way for retirement? Again, we are proud of you, be all that you can be...peace.

As popular as you are judging by the comments I've read,
why didn't you consider taking a position within the
diplomatic corps instead of the army? Is preventing war
not as sensible and perhaps more honourable then preparing
for it? Certainly fewer people are well suited to the former

Pop,
I enjoy your story and wish you well. But before I go I was wondering if you couldn't have pick a better thing to do. An ambassador who champion the struggle of our people would be more fitting dont you think. Why not visit the orphanage, promote issue of the poor, fight environmental condition, promote women issues, promote universal health for our people, oh...there are so many to consider. Why waste time being a puppet to an organization that does nothing by siphon resources from our nation. Are we really having that bad of a military image? What are we protecting ourselves from? Am I missing something?
Person with your quality do not come into the lives of our people every day. Hopefully you will make some effort to take up the issues for our less fortunate who are transparent to even our own eyes. พี่ได้ตำแหน่งนางสาวไทย ตอนนั้นชอบรอยยิ้มของพี่มาก และ
ในที่สุดพี่ก็ได้ตำแหน่ง "ยิ้มงามที่สุดในจักรวาล" กลับมาฝากคน
ไทย ดีใจมาก..เลยครับ แลัวหลังจากนั้น ข่าวของพี่ก็เป็นที่สนใจ
ของมวลชน(รวมทั้งผมด้วย)โดยตลอด ไม่ว่าไปเล่นละครทีวีหรือ
จะเขียนหนังสือ ล่าสุดนี้ก็เป็นเรื่องที่สองแล้ว พี่รู้ไหม! ผมอ่าน
หนังสือพิมพ์,นิตยสาร ฯลฯ จำได้ว่าคอลัมภ์แนะนำหนังสือจะลง
เรื่องที่พี่เขียนกันเยอะมาก น่าปลื้มใจแทนพี่นะ
สุดท้ายนี้ก็ขอให้หนังสือขายดีสมกับที่มีเรื่องดีๆมาขาย
ทำงานมากๆ ก็อย่าลืมพักผ่อนมากๆด้วยนะครับ

Firstly, Areeya...I would like to say thanks for yet another excellent article. Your viewpoints are always wonderfully stimulating, enjoyable, and intriguing to this reader's mind.
I do find one sentence particularly questionable, though...your claim that "Thailand has never been under the colonization of any Western country..."
In the most traditional sense of the word, "colonization" is achieved through political/military action(s).
Since World War II, most argue that "colonization" occurs in the form of trade-economics.
"Colonization" in the traditional sense, however, is (likely) no longer intelligently applicable to modern trends of global, cultural influence.
One could easily argue that, at any level, cultural colonization is, for the most part, a 'colonization' of consciousness. Such rewording is highly applicable to the modern world, where global distribution of popular forms of information--that is--projec
ted ideas--ultimately make their way into the minds of people located very distant from the source of the ideas.
Therefore, it could be argued that Thailand is definitely being "colonized" by the Western world, in the form of movies, news, and any other forms of projected ideas from the Western world which eventually make their way into the minds of people in Thaila

Has the Western movie Titanic "colonized" the consciousness of people in Thailand? The geographically-reverse situation is also observable, although to a much lesser degree -- (Thai Barbie doesn't have dimples, by the way -- I checked). Of all technolog
ies humanly produced thus far, I would suspect the Internet is the most globally "colonizing"--that is, most globally capable of influencing consciousness--of projecting thoughts and perspectives of reality at other distant minds. I would argue that your
web page being written in English is a Western "colonizing" of (mostly) Thai readers. Language is a form of thought-labeling, and I would argue that English, a Western language has nearly "colonized" the entire world.
This leads to an interesting analysis of what exactly a "nation" is. I would suspect that, if anything, a "nation" is, for the most part, the militarized enforcement of popular beliefs--those beliefs being the thoughts, and actions generally grasped onto
and ego-projected by the average consciousness in a given geographical region. (Example: people are grasping onto the thought-label that the region is "Thailand" -- although obviously, when the earth formed, the label "Thailand" did not exist.)
Personally, I don't see perpetual grasping onto thoughts for the sake of "cultural preservation" to be wise -- if anything, pride in its many forms only serves to maintain lower-consciousness on a global scale.
